    Notes:

Judah Hartog Bebber and Judah Isaacs my be the same person.
Likewise Sarah [Isaacs] and Sara Meyer

At the time of writing (January 2016) I have Judah Isaacs and his wife Sarah at the top point of the tree.

However, Jenny Cowen believes that Judah Isaaacs and Judah Bebber are the same person and therefore Sarah [Isaacs] and Sara Meyer.

There is much to commend this argument, but for the present I have them as separate people.

Refer to the article Beber/Bebber/Baber on the Jacobs tree website for more information.

The tree built around Judah Hartog Bebber is based on information from Jenny's tree.

    Died:
In the 1841 he is not with wife & children, so guessing that he is dead.
Youngest child is born approx 1832 hence guesstimate for his death.

Judah married Sarah [ISAACS]. Sarah was born about 1790 in Amsterdam, Holland; died on 25 Dec 1871 in London, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Sarah [ISAACS] was born about 1790 in Amsterdam, Holland; died on 25 Dec 1871 in London, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Boot & Shoe Dealer

    • Census: 2 Apr 1871, St Paul's, Hammersmith, London, England; : 84y; Address: 6 Watney Street

    Notes:

Jenny Cowen has Sarah as being Sarah Meyer and her husband as Judag Hartog Bebber.

The following came from Roderick Young in an email - March 2011
Sometime between 1851 and 1861 Sarah Isaacs left Harrow Alley and moved with two of her unmarried daughters to 1 Watney Street, off the Commercial Road, Whitechapel. And between 1861 and 1871 the women moved again, up the road to 6 Watney Street. After her mother Rebecca's death in 1863, Julia Jacobs went to live with Sarah Isaacs, her grandmother, in Watney Street. Sarah Isaacs died on 27th December 1871 at 6 Watney Street. Her age is given as 86 and the cause of death is given as "Old Age." Julia is recorded as being present at the death and it was she who registered it with the authorities next day. She was 17 years old

    From Jenny & Katrina Cowen:

"These Are the Names Jewish Lives in Australia 1788-1850" published by The Miegunyah Presss in 2006":

The following is a direct quote:-

    "SOLOMON, Abraham Jacob
    b. London, 1826-1889
    Constant, 1849; Free
    Married: Dealer, minister: 14 children

Abraham Jacob Solomon was the grandson of the "world renowned matzah baker" of London of the same name. On 4 July 1849 the 23-year-old Abraham Jacob Solomon of Cutler Street, Aldgate, married Julia Isaacs (Solomon, q.v) of Harrow Alley, Aldgate, in the New Synagogue in London. Chief Rabbi Adler officiated. They arrived, travelling steerage, in Adelaide on the barque Constant on 23 December 1849. The small Adelaide congregation quickly appointed him as the Reader for a salary of 52 pounds a year. Solomon conducted the consecration of the new synagogue building on 5 September 1850. An economic depression in South Australia brought the congregation's agreement to pay Solomon to an abrupt end. There were fewer than 150 Jews in South Australia, and Solomon offered to continue as synagogue reader in an honorary capacity.

In June 1852 Solomon was appointed Reader at the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation for six months, and then returned to Adelaide. On 22 October 1853 he wrote to the Adelaide Hebrew Congregation: "Being compelled through unforeseen circumstances to leave for Melbourne Port Phillip I am obliged to forgo the position I hold in your congregation as officiating Minister. Believe me Gentlemen it grieves me much that I have to do so after receiving such kind treatment from you all since my return from Melbourne".

    1. Michael ISAACS
    2. Henry Baber ISAACS was born about 1810 in Amsterdam, Holland; died on 24 Oct 1873 in London, England.
    3. Rachael Beber ISAACS was born about 1819 in Amsterdam, Holland; died on 3 Feb 1886 in London, England.
    4. 3. Rebecca ISAACS was born between 1821 and 1823 in Holland; died on 19 May 1863 in London, England.
    5. Solomon Beber ISAACS was born about 1824; died on 14 Jan 1886 in St James Westminster district, London, England; was buried on 17 Jan 1886 in London, England.
    6. Sophie ISAACS was born about 1825 in Spitalfields, London, England; died between Oct 1897 and Dec 1897 in Holborn, London, England.
    7. Sarah ISAACS was born about 1825 in Holland.
    8. Isaac ISAACS was born about 1826.
    9. Julia ISAACS was born about 1828 in Middlesex, England; died on 30 Dec 1895 in Adelaide, Australia.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  David JACOBS was born in 1727 (son of Jacob LITZIN); died on 31 Jan 1809 in Whitechapel, London, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Name: David Letson [Litzen]
    • Reference Number: BR 0039aP
    • Reference Number: BR-J
    • Court Case: 11 Oct 1775, London, England; Address: Duke's Place

    • Court Case: 1 Jul 1801, London, England; : 75y; Address: Petticoat Lane area.

    Notes:

The name Litzen is placed by Hyamson on the Henry Jacobs family tree as the original family surname for David Jacobs. In the Great Synagogue Records transcribed by Angela Shire she writes the name as LETSON and there are several names recorded under marriages and births where the Letson name appears.

Phil Kirby did further research and came to the belief that the surname is LITZEN which is German and also a town name in what was Western Prussia. The town still exists. 47?52'00.0"N 10?25'00.0"E

Philip believes that David Litzen moved around the Polish/German areas and came to the UK probably to escape the Polish pogroms.
Philip has also looked at the Polish History and the Russian history and have a pretty good idea about the changing influences on Jews in those areas.

If you look on Familysearch site ( the Mormons) you can see the family name Litzen and it is usually Swedish/German/Finnish.

Philip thinks David Litzen changed his name to Jacobs for business reasons and also because it was easier to pronounce.

When his wife was buried in 1807 at Ducking Pond Lane the burial records list her as being the wife of JACOBS David (David b. Coppel Letson)
Ducking Pond Lane is shown on the 1830 map as Ducking Pond Row and the burial ground on North Street (modern Brady Street)

    Court Case:
David was offered and bought 7 watches.
Discovered they were stolen and reported it to one of Sir John Fielding's Officers.

    Court Case:
David Jacobs accused of stealing two remnants of ribbons when he visited the shop of Joseph Collins, haberdasher, of Southwark, on the pretext of making a purchase

Unfortunately we don't know the outcome.
