    Notes:

Samuel is believed to be a son of Moses and Sarah, this is the story that has been passed down the family.

Unfortunately neither of his marriage certificates give, or even have a space for, a father.

He went to Australia before 1849 (he married in Hobart in 1849)
Moved on to New Zealand before 1869 (1st wife died in Hokitika in 1869)

We do however have a newspaper cutting which does, I believe, tie Samuel to Lawrence as brothers and thereby prove the connection.

There is an entry in the West Coast Times that gives the death of Lawrence Jacobs of Eastern Road, Emerald Hill, Melbourne, and refers to his beloved brother Mr S Jacobs of this town. (i.e Hokitika)

    From Nellie Johnson:-

Unfortunately neither of his marriage certificates give, or even have a space for, a father.

He went to Australia before 1849 (he married in Hobart in 1849)
Moved on to New Zealand before 1869 (1st wife died in Hokitika in 1869)
The family moved to Holitika in approximately 1862. Samuel was still a general dealer, with a store in Revell St. Hokitika.

After Samuel married Emma Bristow in 1876 they moved to Christchurch in the late 1870's early 1880's.
Samuel died bankrupt so Emma and the children had to live with Henry (Samuel's son to Fanny) and his wife Charlotte.

On the Intention to Marry (page 567 entry 697) he is shown to have been a resident of Hokitika for 11 years.

I note that I have his date of birth as a range from 1817 - 1826

On the description record for him when he is transported in 1833 he is aged 18 making his DOB 1815
Given that he is transported in 1833 I think it very unlikely that that he was a 7 year old at the time - I know justice was harsh then, but I don't think it was that bad ?
His marriage certificate to Fanny in 1849 gives his age as 23 making his DOB 1826
His marriage certificate to Emma in 1876 give his age as 52 making his DOB 1824
His death certificate in 1885 gives his age as 68 making his DOB 1817
So obviously it must have been Emma who gave his age at death and as it differs from that on their marriage certificate she must have known the truth
Are we looking at a case of male vanity when it comes to his marriage certificates (or it could be female vanity - not wanting to be seen marrying an older man).

At the end of the day I think that 1817 is much nearer the mark than 1824/1826.

    Court Case:
    Middlesex
Larceny from the Person - stealing a handkerchief
Guilty - Transported for 7 years

    Transported:
Transported to Tasmania onboard the 'Southworth'

'The Downs' are a roadstead (area of sheltered, favourable sea) in the southern North Sea near the English Channel off the east Kent coast

    Electoral Register:
    Fancy Dealer

    Court Case:
This is a contentious entry as not everyone agress that these three are the sons of Moses & Sarah.
I have taken to decision to make the entry with this qualification in the hope that it can later be proved/disproved:

Sampson Jacobs, Samuel Jacobs and Lawrence Jacobs are charged with Larceny from a Dwelling.
Note that in the newspaper entry from the 14th., Sampson is named as Sampson Marks.
Samuel and Laurence (sic) were discharged and the case was dropped against Sampson.
However the articles clearly link them as brothers.

    Electoral Register:
1867 Samuel Jacobs - Hokitika - Revell Street

    Electoral Register:
Appears to own/rent because he is listed at the address and also under the entry for the hotel

    Electoral Register:

    Burgess Rolls:
Samuel Jacobs, Kumara, Leaseholder - Qualification Abandoned - Listed as not entitled to vote

    Died:
Samuel died intestate so we have a copy of both the letter of administration granted to his wife, Emma, and a statement regarding his estate. Apparently he had been declared bankrupt not long before he died.
