    • Residence: 1 Aug 1883, Mittagong, New South Wales, Australia
    • Obituary: 3 Aug 1895

    Notes:

    Birth:
Unfortunately we have conflicted dates of birth.
We only have 2 occasions when we are given his age:-
When he marries in 1876 he gives his age as 42, this gives us 1834
When he dies in 1895 his age is given as 76, which gives us 1819
There is an entry in the Circumcision Extracts in 1824 for a Juda Leib, son of Moses Jacobs of Charles Street, that would fit.
Unfortunately we have nothing else to tie in with it.

    Census:
Berwick Street is missing from the 1841 census.
"Thank you for contacting The National Archives of the United Kingdom.
Unfortunately there is no comprehensive published or unpublished list of streets, or other place elements, missing from the census.
However, we hold some detailed street indexes for London districts, which confirm that all of the returns for the Berwick Street sub-district of St James Westminster are missing from the 1841 census." - May 2016

    Newpspaper Entry:
"On Friday a person named Sampson Jacobs was brought in suffering from a fracture of the kneepan occasioned by a kick from a horse."

    Court Case:
This is a contentious entry as not everyone agrees that these three are the sons of Moses & Sarah.
I have taken to decision to make the entry with this qualification in the hope that it can later be proved/disproved:

Sampson Jacobs, Samuel Jacobs and Lawence Jacobs are charged with Larceny from a Dwelling.
Note that in the newspaper entry from the 14th., Sampson is named as Sampson Marks but later articles refer to him as Jacobs.
Samuel and Laurence (sic) were discharged and the case was dropped against Sampson.
However the articles clearly link them as brothers.

    Court Case:
    Small Debts Court
Jonas Curner v Samson Jacobs - value of saddle lent, ?4
    Defendant pleaded not indebted

Not 100% certain, but believe this to be correct Sampson Jacobs

Says that he is a law agent, has lived at 101 Berwick Street for the last 18 years.

    Died:
From Peter Wales who found the entry:-

The cause of death is strange in death certificate which was signed by the coroner who I would imagine would have carried out an autopsy, in view of the unusual circumstances of his death.

Even in those days you would not be expected to die from fractured ribs.

I have had a number of these, one of them a double fracture, mainly through football injuries and the hospital do not even take X rays of the injuries.

Also apart form the initial injury which is a bit painful. there is only discomfort for the next 6 weeks until they are healed.

If he died from complications as a result of the injury, why does the certificate not indicate it?

I will try to check Coroner's report/details of inquest next time I am in London but I am not very optimistic that I will find anything.

The address death occurred is 24 Tenison Street, in the area on the south bank of the Thames between Waterloo and Hungerford Bridges.

The cemetery records indicated that Moses was living in Soho, prior to his death, so probably it was a friend or relative's house and will try to check 1851 and 1861 census to find out more.

Oct 2010 - Checked 1851 census for the address where Moses died but he is not listed there - unsurprising as we have him with his wife already.

    Notes:

From Gerry Newnham - March 2011:
. In the 1851 Census Sarah says she was born in the parish of St Martins in the Fields.

    2. Sarah's marriage record gives her patronymic as "Sara bat Simha Segal" (Harold Lewin's transcript).

    3. Simha equates to Simon.

    4. Searching the Rate Books in the Westminster Archives for the period from
1793 to 1813 (I have still to check later records) shows only one Simon Levy in St Martin's parish and he is living in Russell Court, off Drury Lane.

    5. Simon's wife, Hannah, appears in an Old Bailey trial as a witness in 1801. The entry in the trial record reads: "HANNAH LEVY sworn. - I am the wife of Simon Levy , who keeps a house and shop in Russel court..." (sic)

    6. It seems Simon LEVY was a reasonably prosperous trader and was insured with the Sun Insurance Co - details awaited.

    7. The inscription on Simon LEVY's grave is:

"In memory of/Mr Simon Levy/Late of Charles St Soho Square/Obit Jany 30th AM 5587/In the sixty seventh year/Of his life" (died 30 Jan 1827)

    8. In 1825 Moses JACOBS had a shop in Charles Street (now called Soho Street).
