    Notes:

    Note from Nellie Johnston:-

Henry Gomm was convicted at the Gloucestershire Assizes so I have attached various newspaper clippings. He was originally sentenced to death but it was commuted to 14yrs in Van Dieman's Land. He arrived on the ship Asia (4) & I have transcribed what I can of Henry's sentence. Apparently there were about 20 poachers that night & only about 14 got caught. Some got off in the trial & the others were transported. On Henry's sentence sheet it mentions he wounded William Nicholls but in the paper it states it was William Evans they wounded.

    Court Case:
Henry Gomm was found guilty of malicious stabbing with intent to harm, William Nicholls.
He was sentenced to death but this was commuted to transportation to Australia in 1835 for 14 years.
He was married with 3 children at the time.

    Transported:
Held on the prison hulk 'Ganymede'
Transported on board the 'Asia' to Hobart.
    Arrived Hobart 21 Feb 1836

    Census:
This census entry is for a Henry Gomm and list the number of occupants which fits roughly with our Henry Gomm's family. The main stumbling block is that he describes himself as being Free, when he is still a convict.
