    Note from Manfred Lindner's notes:-

My mother, who died in 1926 when I was six years of age. Thus, I have very few personal recollections of her, although her image is vivid. An expert seamstress and dressmaker, according to statements made by her sister, Rachel, to me.
For years she made all the dresses and suits that her three children wore. Apparently she could look in a department -store window at a gown or suit, then purchase material and come home to make a very close reproduction of the object on display.

Hannah married Harry MARKS before 1910 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. Harry was born on 18 Jul 1878 in Illinois, USA; died on 14 Apr 1911 in Illinois, USA; was buried on 17 Apr 1911 in Free Sons Cem., Forest Park, Illinois, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Notes from Manfred Lindner's data:-

His family emigrated from London after February, 1853, eventually settling in Albany NY of that year, when he was seven. Not much is known about those pre-Civil War years. His father, Aaron (AKA Henry, and Harry) was listed in the 1860 census
for Albany as a "master cigarmaker", his traditional trade in London. Sons Moses & Jacob both learned the trade from their father, Aaron. On Sept. 2, 1864 during the Civil War, Jacob enlisted in Co. A of the 91st Infantry Regiment from Albany.
He saw action in the Battle of Five Forks, and was wounded with a musket ball in his left thigh on March 31, 1865 at a site known as Gravelly Run (also as the Battle of White Oak Road). After being hospitalized for some weeks, he was honorably
discharged from the Army on June 21,1865. Fairly complete details of enlistment records, muster roll and pension papers are maintained in my file. Jacob returned to Albany and resumed the cigarmaking trade. The City of Albany business
directories listed him in the years 1868 and 1869, but nothing in later years. However, the Chicago City directory for the period 1869,70 shows that Jacob De Costa had gone into the grocery business with one James Day in Chicago. Whether this
geographical shift was motivated by economics or by family disagreements is not known. But of considerable significance to his descendants is the fact that he was a lodger at that time in the home of one Lewis and Jane Simons, this being
recorded in the Federal Census for Chicago for the year 1870. On Dec. 31, 1870, Jacob, at 24, was married by a Justice of the Peace to the oldest of the Simons children, Rayna (then 20 years of age). Perhaps by that time (or surely soon
thereafter) he became a partner of Lewis Simons in the latter's furniture store at 224 Blue Island Avenue, in Chicago. The De Costas were to raise their family of eight children, and to remain in the furniture business at this address for the
rest of their natural lives. In fact, the 1902 Chicago business directory still listed the Blue Island address as the residence of three of the De Costa offspring (Hannah, Harry, and Ray). The location was thus identified with the Simons-De
Costa union for a period of at least 32 years. The 1890 & 1891 business directories also listed a De Costa's Hall at the Blue Island address. This was well known among family members to the present time as a hall which was rented out for
parties, weddings, lodge meetings and other social occasions as a means of providing additional income to help support the large family. Jacob De Costa did not live to see any of his children grow to maturity. On July 25, 1886 he succumbed to
an embolism following an operation for rectal cancer, leaving his wife, Rayna, to raise their eight children. He was forty years of age at his death.

    Notes:

    Notes from Manfred Lindner's data:-

Remembered by her descendants & family members as "Rayna Simons DeCosta", there have been at least a dozen namesakes. Yet there is no English birth record of a Rayna Simons, daughter of Lewis and Jane.
    Ultimately I learned the reason.

In searching for the Lewis/Jane Simons family in the 1861 census for Bristol, England, the children were listed, in order of age, as Maria, Hannah, Henry, Moses & David. Maria's age was listed as11 years and her birthplace as Gloucester, England.

No family member alive in 1990- and to whom I spoke of this- was aware of the name Maria. All thought that the name of the oldest child was Rayna, born in 1850 in Bristol. Ultimately I obtained the birth certificate for Maria Simons; it confirmed in every detail the information in the 1861 census, and the birthdate (May 20, 1850) is that of gm Rayna. By 1870 the Simons Family was already listed in the Chicago, U. S. census, and in that record the oldest child was listed as Rayna Simons, age 20.

Sometime within that 9-year interval Maria became Rayna. We now know that her paternal grandmother's name was Reyna Uzieli, who married a Henry Simons in August of 1810. Henry is known to be the name of the father of Lewis Simons, Rayna's father (see family 66 and notes on individual 237).

[Note by David Simpson 9/Aug/2008:- Found the family in 1851 census and she is listed as Rayner in that census]

Why the name Maria? Apparently she was named after her maternal aunt, Maria Jacobs (who was married to one Joseph Alexander just a few months following the marriage of Jane and Lewis), but changed the name to Rayna some time between 1861 and 1870. Thus, she swapped the name of a maternal aunt for that of her paternal grandmother.

The great-grandfather, born in London, but after marriage in 1845 moved to Bristol where he and hsis wife Jane raised seven children. They immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1869/70, settling in Chicago, where they opened a furniture store on Blue
Island Ave. Some time between 1875 and 1883 their son-in-law, Jacob De Costa, assumed operation of the furniture store business, and the Simons opened a shoe store on W. Madison St. (Information and chronology from Chicago City business
    directories).

I (Manfred) know of only one anecdote, related to me by Edwin De Costa in 1990, concerning Lewis Simons. It was said that, at the funeral in 1886 for his son-in-law Jacob De Costa, a dispute erupted between Lewis and Jacob's father, Aaron (Henry) De
Costa. This led to an exchange of blows between the two men, after which time there was apparently never again any communication between the two families.

    Notes:

    Note from Manfred Linder's data:-

Owing to her very long life, many of her great-grandchildren have vivid recollections of this great-grandmother. One story has it that whenever she saw a great-grandchild she would give him/her a nickel. Another was that she was a very tiny woman, possibly due to shrinkage associated with old age Lived to be nearly 95.

She and husband settled in Chicago from London in 1869-70, opening a furniture store on Blue Island Avenue which was later taken over by their oldest daughter and son-in-law. Later they operated a shoe store on Jackson Boulevard. At the time of her death she was living in the home of her youngest son, Joseph Simons.
