Howard Samuel, 47, a real estate tycoon, arrived here Friday night, registered at the Grande Bretagne hotel, and went to Glyfada beach 12 miles south of Athens for a swim yesterday morning. Lifeguards recovered his body a few hours later. The British consulate sealed his hotel room after police re- ported his death. A post mor- tem was scheduled for tomor- row. The coroner said the possi- bility that Samuel died of a heart attack could not be ex- cluded. The sea at the point where his body was found is shallow. Despite his wealth, Samuel was a Socialist. He was a friend of the late Aneurln Bev- an, Labor party leader, and a director of the Socialist week- ly Tribune. Samuel left school at 16, and became a surveyor s clerk. He started in the realty business with a capital of $500. Later he and his brother, Basil, formed their own realty f i r m a n d amassed a fortune. In 1944, he married Jane Lane, an artist whose work has been exhibited in London and New York City. They have two children, Nigel, 15, and Nicola, 10. Their marriage was dis- solved in 1958 but they re-mar- ried four months later. Samuel and his brother in 1959 launched a s u c- cessful company, Great Port- land Estates Ltd., taking over their already extensive London interests. They sold $3,864,000 worth of Great Portland shares and their remaining shares were es- timated to be worth $11,200,000, The company s tenants include the British Broadcasting corpo- ration a n d London's central electricity authority. | SAMUEL, Howard Samuel (I4803)
