Notes - Note from Manfred Lindner's records:-
The great-grandfather, born in London, but after marriage in 1845 moved to Bristol where he and hsis wife Jane raised seven children. They immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1869/70, settling in Chicago, where they opened a furniture store on Blue
Island Ave. Some time between 1875 and 1883 their son-in-law, Jacob De Costa, assumed operation of the furniture store business, and the Simons opened a shoe store on W. Madison St. (Information and chronology from Chicago City business
directories).
I (Manfred) know of only one anecdote, related to me by Edwin De Costa in 1990, concerning Lewis Simons. It was said that, at the funeral in 1886 for his son-in-law Jacob De Costa, a dispute erupted between Lewis and Jacob's father, Aaron (Henry) De
Costa. This led to an exchange of blows between the two men, after which time there was apparently never again any communication between the two families.
