Notes |
- On Martin Hill's Brompton Cemetery transcripts there is an Abraham KISCH, wife Isabella, who died in 1849 and she had died in 1846.
Not entirely sure if this is the correct family as in the 1841 Census he is the "Secretary and Reader of the Western Synagogue" and was living in St Alban's Place, where I believe the Synagogue was situated at the time. In the will Abraham KISCH is described as a Tailor.
So more work needed to identify the correct families and confirm the names of the other 2 daughters of Simon and Hannah LEVY.
From Phil:
If you look on Familysearch Community Trees you will see data on Abraham Kisch and his family.
In Berger 1861-70 there is the entry for Flora Kisch daughter of the late Abraham Kisch marriage to Mr M Phillips of Cardiff.
There is also the 1856 entry for Simon Abraham Kisch Bedford St Covent Garden bankrupt tailor- is he the same son of Abraham Secretary of the Western Synagogue.
In Berger 1861-70 there is another entry for Joel Seymour Kisch son of S A Kisch of Lancaster Place 1861.
In 1865 Joel matriculated Univ of London.
Further entry for the death of Isabella eldest daughter of S A Kisch 8 Lancaster Place age 11 years
From Gerry:
Found a tree on Ancestry for Abraham Kisch that might help:

I have been in touch with Todd Hancock who has tree on Ancestry showing Abraham Kisch and his wife Isabella Levy. Although he has not traced Isabella's parents it does look fairly certain that her parents were Simon & Hannah Levy. Interestingly, Todd says that the Kisch family came from Prague. You will no doubt recall that in his will Simon Levy mentions:
"my brother Nathan Levy and my sister Julia Levy, both now Residing at Prague in the Kingdom of Bohemia".
This raises the possibility that Simon's parents came from Prague or even that Simon himself was born in Prague.
- Like Gerry the only Abraham Kisch that I can find is the one in the 1841 census.
His wife does have the right name and the number of Kischs is minimal (30 according to Ancestry, 24 according to FindMyPast)
He has (amongst other children) a son called Simon, aged 19
In the 1851 census there is a Simon A Kisch who is a Tailor and Robe Maker

This Simon also appears, as Simon Abraham Kisch in the 1848 Post Office Directory at 40 Cranbourne Street.

By 1861 Simon has become a Managing Clerk at a solicitors

In 1871 he has progressed to being an Attorney and Solicitor

In 1881 he is still a Solicitor

The Abraham Kisch that we are looking for was already married in 1825 when the will was written.
The Abraham at the synagogue is listed as 45 in 1841 and Isabella as 42
Their eldest child is 19 so would have been born about 1822
His burial details at CemeteryScribes are at

The one big problem is that his wife is listed as Isabella Simpson. There are however doubts about the surname Simpson.
It is also suggested that she is Beila bat Simhah HaLevi [Possibly Simon Levy?]
On balance, I am inclined to think that there is only the one Abraham Kisch.
