Notes - From Phil Kirby [11/04/2016]
Data on Moses Levy and his wife can be seen on Cemetery Scribes see Moses Levey(Levey) Moshe b Eliezer c 1788-1870 ID 2310 and Miriam (Miriam b Yekutiel) 1805-1855 ID 2309.
Moses Levy was a rag merchant. He appears in London Trade Directories and Insurance policies from at least 1835- Moses Levy Rag Merchant 109 Gravel Lane,Pigot.
In a newspaper article headed Brutal Results of the Poor Law- The Standard Fri Dec 18, 1835.."Mr Levy ( a merchant) residing at 109 Gravel Lane who went to the parish authorities and pledged himself to pay all expenses..." This was in respect of him seeking to help a destitute woman.
His wife Miriam aka Mary has a rare monument depicting her image - see Cemetery Scribes link.
The Morning Post Weds Sept 6, 1837.."Mr Levy 109 Gravel Lane Houndsditch general rag merchant, stated that having a large quantity of old paper to sort he employed several young women to do the work".
Moses Levy and Miriam had at least 10 children:
Hannah 1822-1895; Isreal 1824; John 1826-1872; Rosetta 1829-1921; Isaac 1832-1858; Sarah 1834; Lewis 1836-1902; Isabella 1838-1902; Rebecca 1840-1909; Mtalida 1844-1888.
However, in the Old Bailey Trials 13 Dec 1847 regarding a theft a witness Samuel Levy appeared and stated "I am a rag mercahnt 109 Gravel Lane Houndsditch.." I am unsure who Samuel maybe.
