The cause of death is strange in death certificate which was signed by the coroner who I would imagine would have carried out an autopsy, in view of the unusual circumstances of his death.

Even in those days you would not be expected to die from fractured ribs.

I have had a number of these, one of them a double fracture, mainly through football injuries and the hospital do not even take X rays of the injuries.

Also apart form the initial injury which is a bit painful. there is only discomfort for the next 6 weeks until they are healed.

If he died from complications as a result of the injury, why does the certificate not indicate it?

I will try to check Coroner's report/details of inquest next time I am in London but I am not very optimistic that I will find anything.

The address death occurred is 24 Tenison Street, in the area on the south bank of the Thames between Waterloo and Hungerford Bridges.

The cemetery records indicated that Moses was living in Soho, prior to his death, so probably it was a friend or relative's house and will try to check 1851 and 1861 census to find out more.

Oct 2010 - Checked 1851 census for the address where Moses died but he is not listed there - unsurprising as we have him with his wife already.

The family moved to Holitika in approximately 1862. Samuel was still a general dealer, with a store in Revell St. Hokitika.

After Samuel married Emma Bristow in 1876 they moved to Christchurch in the late 1870's early 1880's.
Samuel died bankrupt so Emma and the children had to live with Henry (Samuel's son to Fanny) and his wife Charlotte.



We do however have a newspaper cutting which does, I believe, tie Samuel to Lawrence as brothers and thereby prove the connection.

On the Intention to Marry (page 567 entry 697) he is shown to have been a resident of Hokitika for 11 years.

I note that I have his date of birth as a range from 1817 - 1826

On the description record for him when he is transported in 1833 he is aged 18 making his DOB 1815
Given that he is transported in 1833 I think it very unlikely that that he was a 7 year old at the time - I know justice was harsh then, but I don't think it was that bad ?
His marriage certificate to Fanny in 1849 gives his age as 23 making his DOB 1826
His marriage certificate to Emma in 1876 give his age as 52 making his DOB 1824
His death certificate in 1885 gives his age as 68 making his DOB 1817
So obviously it must have been Emma who gave his age at death and as it differs from that on their marriage certificate she must have known the truth
Are we looking at a case of male vanity when it comes to his marriage certificates (or it could be female vanity - not wanting to be seen marrying an older man).

At the end of the day I think that 1817 is much nearer the mark than 1824/1826.

I have taken to decision to make the entry with this qualification in the hope that it can later be proved/disproved:

Sampson Jacobs, Samuel Jacobs and Lawrence Jacobs are charged with Larceny from a Dwelling.
Note that in the newspaper entry from the 14th., Sampson is named as Sampson Marks.
Samuel and Laurence (sic) were discharged and the case was dropped against Sampson.
However the articles clearly link them as brothers.

When Henry died his last address was shared with his son-in-law John Wales. Peter Wales gives us the following extra information:-

"37 Canterbury Place (at the end of the Lambeth Walk). This was the Wales family home up to the 2nd world war, birthplace of all Alice and John's children including my father. It was hit by a bomb, aimed at Waterloo Station, and completely destroyed. If you have ever seen the film passport to Pimlico, it was actually filmed on the bomb site where Canterbury Place once stood."

We know that Henry spent a number of years in Brighton from around 1858 to 1872.
This is borne out by entries in the various trrade directories for Brighton.
However, it would appear that he was originally there in a business and house belonging to David Jacobs, who is possibly his elder brother.

Birth:
The entry in Myer Solomon's Circumcision Register fits well.
Given that it was custom to circumcise a male child about 8 days after birth, this would give us a birth date of 17th September 1831

Family of Lawrence Jacobs & Catherine O'Regen

There are some discrepancies around the data we have for this family.

We have a marriage certificate for Lawrence and Catherine O'Regen dated 1865
Yet we have at least 2 children (Lawrence Samuel & Sarah Ann) born before this date.
First assumption is that there was a prior marriage - despite Lawrence and Catherine being Bachelor & Spinster on the marriage certificate.

However, Sarah Ann's birth certificate in 1862 gives her mother as Kate Jacobs, formerly Regen (Catherine/Kate and the O' dropped from O'Regen) .
This certificate also lists Lawrence and refers to 2 deceased children, names unknown.
Sarah Ann's birth certificate also gives a marriage date of 1859 for her parents.

Philip's birth certificate in 1868 tells us that his parents, Lawrence & Catherine nee Regan, married in 1860.
It also lists brothers Lawrence, aged 7 and David, aged 3. Sarah Ann is listed as dead and we learn of another brother, also deceased, called Simeon.

So now we have some extra confusion:
In 1862 when Sarah was born we knew of two previously deceased children, one of whom could be Simeon (although if we take the order of listing as order of birth, then Simeon came after Sarah Ann), but then who was the second, and why are they not listed on Philip's birth certificate?

Mr Jacobs, who had been ill for many weeks, and in a state of unconsciousness for about a fortnight, passed peacefully away at the ripe age of 76. He was born in London, and arrived in the colony about 30 years ago. The day of his death was the 12th anniversary of his arrival at Mittagong, where he lived some time before coming to Bowral. During his illness he was attended by Dr. Fisher, the cause of death being paralysis. He leaves a widow and a family of young children. The interment took place in the General Cemetery yesterday afternoon. Mr. Moss being the undertaker. The Rev. Gerard D'Arcy-Irvine officiating.

Searching in Australia found three posssibles.
The have been included just in case they are correct. My main reason for their inclusion is based largely on the fact that they are the only entries that I can find anywhere with his full name.
Unfortunately I can find no Passenger List entries for Henry arriving in Australia.

Received email from Robert Ward [Sept 2009]

My wife is descended from one of Edward Lawrence Levy's uncles, Charles Lewis (they changed their name from Levy to Lewis), who was her GG Grandfather.

Edward Lawrence Levy was the son of Lawrence Levy who was a Sheriff's Officer for Middlesex and also dabbled in the theatre - he owned the lease of the Victoria theatre at one point.

Edward Lawrence was articled to my wife's ancestor Charles Lewis (as stated in the case of Gibbs 1846 as reported in The Daily News, 22 January 1846). The case of Levite v Lewis (see The Times, 21st June, 1864) illustrates the break down of the relationship with his uncle, probably as a result of Edward Lawrence's unprofessional behaviour.

I haven't yet finished ploughing through all the newspaper reports of Edward Lawrence's frauds, but he certainly seems to have achieved notoriety.

This whole wider branch of the Levy family is interesting and its members appear in the press many times from around 1820 into the 1890s, usually relating to their money lending, professional and unprofessional activities, and through their marriages they have close links with the top professional classes and aristocracy, but analysing and recording it all is a large undertaking.


Robert Ward has found references to Edward Lawrence Levy in the Old Bailey records.
I carried out a search and found four entries (2 of which mention sons):

Charged with fraud in 1870. Age about 42. He is referred to as having been a solicitor in Bow Street in 1865. Reference is made to Levy having a brother in Australia. Mentions that he had been in Paris. Not Guilty. (Ref: t18700711-582)

He appears as a witness in the Old Bailey records in 1874 as Managing Clerk to a solicitor called Lind (Ref: t18740817-516)

Charged with fraud in 1879. Age about 53. "He is again indicted" refers to an earlier event.
Another mention of Paris, with several witnesses coming to England to testify. Reference to a son, Daniel Levy who is a clerk with Messrs Fisher. Guilty - 18 months imprisonment.

Sarah was poisoned with arsenic.
Cox was charged with poisoning and attempted murder.
His defence was that he intended to commit suicide through poisoning but, through one thing and another, Sarah ended up drinking the poison.
Cox went and threw himself in the river, but was rescued.
The jury found him not guilty, but the judge charged him with attempted suicide.

Was driving his wagon in Ireland when the shaft pin broke, he was thrown to the ground and the wagon went over him, killing him.

His History

On his marriage certificate:
he gives his father as Lewis Braham, Clothier
he names his mother as Annie Braham nee Stevens - deceased.

In the censuses (1881, 1891, 1901) he is pretty consistent:
DOB calculates out to 1855
Place of Birth: London (1881), London-Hampstead(1891), England (1901)

I have never been able to find a birth for him - either as Sydney H Braham or Abraham.
I can find no record of a Lewis (A)Braham marrying an Annie Stevens at the right time for his birth.

This leaves me very few possibilities:
1. He lied on his marriage certificate
2. The marriage cert was mis-transcribed - unlikely because I saw the original at Edinburgh
3. He was adopted by Lewis Braham & Annie Stevens - still unlikely because I haven't found Lewis and Annie marrying.

4. There is another family of Brahams:-
Lewis Michael Abraham married Hannah Jacobs in 1852
They had 4 children that I know of.
Simeon Henry was born in November 1854 in London
In 1871 Lewis Michael is now calling himself, and the children, Braham
He is a widower, so Hannah Jacobs has died by this time. (Between 1860 and 1871)
Simeon Henry is now listed as Sydney Henry

It is possible that:
a) Lewis remarried after Hannah's death, to Annie Stevens and Sydney adopted her as mother.
However, Lewis Michael is still listed as Widower.
b) Sydney Henry 'anglicised' his mother's maiden name



According to my mother:
The family name was changed from Abraham to Braham because Lewis married out of the faith. Hannah Jacobs sounds Jewish, Annie Stevens doesn't. [This now seems unlikely because when Hannah died she was called Braham, so the name change took place before July 1870].

Marriage By Declaration
===================
In Scotland Marriage by Declaration was once quite common and remained legal and valid until 1939.
All that was required was that the couple declare their intentions before two witnesses.
The problem with Marriage by Declaration was that occasionally there were misunderstandings and deceptions that proved messy.
Issues of sobriety at the time of the declaration as well as possibility of misunderstandings about whether the declaration was of betrothal or actual marriage could put the relationship in doubt, lacking reliable witnesses.
Since the transaction was informal and unrecorded it could be difficult to prove the legitimacy of offspring and rights of inheritance if either party abandoned the relationship.
Eligibility to marry could be cast in doubt if a previous marriage was alleged but could not be proved.
The old practice of English couples running off to Gretna Green at the Scottish boarder to be married by the blacksmith, under the more expedient Scottish law presents an exciting and romantic scenario.
Gretna Green is still a very popular wedding destination but nowadays prior notice must be filed with the local registrar

The story of Maria is not a happy one and I will describe. She married Horace Wilfred SPAFFORD in 1904:

Doctor's Report
Maria had been found wandering by the Police at Walton Road 5.15 am where a crowd had gathered. She was behaving incoherently and unable to speak clearly. On admittance to the workhouse 31 Oct 1908 she was unable to talk coherently; she stared into space; heard voices and sounds and talked to herself. She did have more coherent moments but also stated that her food was being poisoned and that her husband was not living with her although Horace denied this. She did not want to return to him. There is a full report on Maria with descriptions of other behaviour.

She was discharged to the Infirmary ( the note on an earlier record is difficult to read). I do not know what happened to her between 1908 and 1917.
However, in 1917 Maria appears at Fulham Britten Street Old and New Workhouses - 12.6.1917 Maria SPAFFORD to HANWELL ASYLUM

This is The London County Asylum Hanwell 1889-1917

This maybe a GRO Death Index Record for Maria but a copy is required to confirm:

Base on current research it appears that the Francis Norton and Julai Jacobs line ended with the death of Maria and her sister Dinah because they had no children and Dinah appears not to have married.
