Notes:

The name Litzen is placed by Hyamson on the Henry Jacobs family tree as the original family surname for David Jacobs. In the Great Synagogue Records transcribed by Angela Shire she writes the name as LETSON and there are several names recorded under marriages and births where the Letson name appears.

Phil Kirby did further research and came to the belief that the surname is LITZEN which is German and also a town name in what was Western Prussia. The town still exists. 47?52'00.0"N 10?25'00.0"E

Philip believes that David Litzen moved around the Polish/German areas and came to the UK probably to escape the Polish pogroms.
Philip has also looked at the Polish History and the Russian history and have a pretty good idea about the changing influences on Jews in those areas.

If you look on Familysearch site ( the Mormons) you can see the family name Litzen and it is usually Swedish/German/Finnish.

Philip thinks David Litzen changed his name to Jacobs for business reasons and also because it was easier to pronounce.

When his wife was buried in 1807 at Ducking Pond Lane the burial records list her as being the wife of JACOBS David (David b. Coppel Letson)
Ducking Pond Lane is shown on the 1830 map as Ducking Pond Row and the burial ground on North Street (modern Brady Street)

Although the trial is in the name of SAMUEL Jacobs, this is in fact David. This information came from his record at Newgate Prison in 1801.

When he wrote his will in 1843 he had 5 freehold premises.
Interestingly in his will he names his daughter-in-law Milcha, wife of his son Lewis, with money left in trust with Henry. The implication is that Lewis may have financial troubles.

Looking at a possible wife for Philip Jacobs (1771 - 1845).

I was contacted in December 2014 by Anne Piccoli asking me whether I thought that his wife was Wilmott Gilbert as reported on two Ancestry trees.

Anne was sceptical about it, especially as the surname was 'Jacob' rather than 'Jacobs'

My conclusion is that she is right and this is not the correct marriage.

My logic is as follows:-

Philip Jacob married Wilmott Gilbert in the parish church of St Luke, Finsbury on the 11th January 1794
This could be OK because it is not unusual for couples of mixed faith to marry in both church and synagogue
A slightly unusual item is that her signature seems to read as Rebecca rather than Wilmott?
As far as I can tell, all the children of 'our' Philip were Jewish
We believe that Philip's wife died before 1844 as she is not mentioned in his will, written 1843.
Looking through Ancestry, we find a burial for Wilmott Jacob in 1824
Whilst this would fit for our Philip's wife, we again have the surname as Jacob
What I believe is more conclusive is that Philip & Wilmott Jacob had two children baptised
1801 Thomas, son of Philip and Willmott Jacob
1803 Eliza, daughter of Philip and Willmott Jacob.
I notice that neither of the two trees on Ancestry have found these baptisms.
No single one of these points is conclusive but I feel the combination of them rules out Wilmott as the wife of our Philip.

Even in those days you would not be expected to die from fractured ribs.

I have had a number of these, one of them a double fracture, mainly through football injuries and the hospital do not even take X rays of the injuries.

Also apart form the initial injury which is a bit painful. there is only discomfort for the next 6 weeks until they are healed.

If he died from complications as a result of the injury, why does the certificate not indicate it?

I will try to check Coroner's report/details of inquest next time I am in London but I am not very optimistic that I will find anything.

The address death occurred is 24 Tenison Street, in the area on the south bank of the Thames between Waterloo and Hungerford Bridges.

The cemetery records indicated that Moses was living in Soho, prior to his death, so probably it was a friend or relative's house and will try to check 1851 and 1861 census to find out more.

Julia, Amelia and Agnes are actresses using the stage name Burdett.
It is believed that they are all using the surname to help them hide from Amelia's husband Maurice Davies as he is dicorving her.

The family moved to Holitika in approximately 1862. Samuel was still a general dealer, with a store in Revell St. Hokitika.

After Samuel married Emma Bristow in 1876 they moved to Christchurch in the late 1870's early 1880's.
Samuel died bankrupt so Emma and the children had to live with Henry (Samuel's son to Fanny) and his wife Charlotte.



We do however have a newspaper cutting which does, I believe, tie Samuel to Lawrence as brothers and thereby prove the connection.

On the Intention to Marry (page 567 entry 697) he is shown to have been a resident of Hokitika for 11 years.

I note that I have his date of birth as a range from 1817 - 1826

On the description record for him when he is transported in 1833 he is aged 18 making his DOB 1815
Given that he is transported in 1833 I think it very unlikely that that he was a 7 year old at the time - I know justice was harsh then, but I don't think it was that bad ?
His marriage certificate to Fanny in 1849 gives his age as 23 making his DOB 1826
His marriage certificate to Emma in 1876 give his age as 52 making his DOB 1824
His death certificate in 1885 gives his age as 68 making his DOB 1817
So obviously it must have been Emma who gave his age at death and as it differs from that on their marriage certificate she must have known the truth
Are we looking at a case of male vanity when it comes to his marriage certificates (or it could be female vanity - not wanting to be seen marrying an older man).

At the end of the day I think that 1817 is much nearer the mark than 1824/1826.

Note that in the newspaper entry from the 14th., Sampson is named as Sampson Marks.
Samuel and Laurence (sic) were discharged and the case was dropped against Sampson.
However the articles clearly link them as brothers.

When Henry died his last address was shared with his son-in-law John Wales. Peter Wales gives us the following extra information:-

"37 Canterbury Place (at the end of the Lambeth Walk). This was the Wales family home up to the 2nd world war, birthplace of all Alice and John's children including my father. It was hit by a bomb, aimed at Waterloo Station, and completely destroyed. If you have ever seen the film passport to Pimlico, it was actually filmed on the bomb site where Canterbury Place once stood."

We know that Henry spent a number of years in Brighton from around 1858 to 1872.
This is borne out by entries in the various trrade directories for Brighton.
However, it would appear that he was originally there in a business and house belonging to David Jacobs, who is possibly his elder brother.

Birth:
The entry in Myer Solomon's Circumcision Register fits well.
Given that it was custom to circumcise a male child about 8 days after birth, this would give us a birth date of 17th September 1831

Family of Lawrence Jacobs & Catherine O'Regen

There are some discrepancies around the data we have for this family.

We have a marriage certificate for Lawrence and Catherine O'Regen dated 1865
Yet we have at least 2 children (Lawrence Samuel & Sarah Ann) born before this date.
First assumption is that there was a prior marriage - despite Lawrence and Catherine being Bachelor & Spinster on the marriage certificate.

However, Sarah Ann's birth certificate in 1862 gives her mother as Kate Jacobs, formerly Regen (Catherine/Kate and the O' dropped from O'Regen) .
This certificate also lists Lawrence and refers to 2 deceased children, names unknown.
Sarah Ann's birth certificate also gives a marriage date of 1859 for her parents.

Philip's birth certificate in 1868 tells us that his parents, Lawrence & Catherine nee Regan, married in 1860.
It also lists brothers Lawrence, aged 7 and David, aged 3. Sarah Ann is listed as dead and we learn of another brother, also deceased, called Simeon.

So now we have some extra confusion:
In 1862 when Sarah was born we knew of two previously deceased children, one of whom could be Simeon (although if we take the order of listing as order of birth, then Simeon came after Sarah Ann), but then who was the second, and why are they not listed on Philip's birth certificate?

This is a contentious entry as not everyone agress that these three are the sons of Moses & Sarah.
I have taken to decision to make the entry with this qualification in the hope that it can later be proved/disproved:

Sampson Jacobs, Samuel Jacobs and Lawence Jacobs are charged with Larceny from a Dwelling.
Note that in the newspaper entry from the 14th., Sampson is named as Sampson Marks.
Samuel and Laurence (sic) were discharged and the case was dropped against Sampson.

Newpspaper Entry:

Mr Samson Jacobs - A well-known local identity - Samson Jacobs - died at his residence, Bendooley Street, on Thursday morning. Mr Jacobs, who had been ill for many weeks, and in a state of unconsciousness for about a fortnight, passed peacefully away at the ripe age of 76. He was born in London, and arrived in the colony about 30 years ago. The day of his death was the 12th anniversary of his arrival at Mittagong, where he lived some time before coming to Bowral. During his illness he was attended by Dr. Fisher, the cause of death being paralysis. He leaves a widow and a family of young children. The interment took place in the General Cemetery yesterday afternoon. Mr. Moss being the undertaker. The Rev. Gerard D'Arcy-Irvine officiating.

Searching in Australia found three posssibles.
The have been included just in case they are correct. My main reason for their inclusion is based largely on the fact that they are the only entries that I can find anywhere with his full name.
Unfortunately I can find no Passenger List entries for Henry arriving in Australia.

Received email from Robert Ward [Sept 2009]

My wife is descended from one of Edward Lawrence Levy's uncles, Charles Lewis (they changed their name from Levy to Lewis), who was her GG Grandfather.

Edward Lawrence Levy was the son of Lawrence Levy who was a Sheriff's Officer for Middlesex and also dabbled in the theatre - he owned the lease of the Victoria theatre at one point.

Edward Lawrence was articled to my wife's ancestor Charles Lewis (as stated in the case of Gibbs 1846 as reported in The Daily News, 22 January 1846). The case of Levite v Lewis (see The Times, 21st June, 1864) illustrates the break down of the relationship with his uncle, probably as a result of Edward Lawrence's unprofessional behaviour.

I haven't yet finished ploughing through all the newspaper reports of Edward Lawrence's frauds, but he certainly seems to have achieved notoriety.

This whole wider branch of the Levy family is interesting and its members appear in the press many times from around 1820 into the 1890s, usually relating to their money lending, professional and unprofessional activities, and through their marriages they have close links with the top professional classes and aristocracy, but analysing and recording it all is a large undertaking.


Robert Ward has found references to Edward Lawrence Levy in the Old Bailey records.
I carried out a search and found four entries (2 of which mention sons):

Charged with fraud in 1870. Age about 42. He is referred to as having been a solicitor in Bow Street in 1865. Reference is made to Levy having a brother in Australia. Mentions that he had been in Paris. Not Guilty. (Ref: t18700711-582)

He appears as a witness in the Old Bailey records in 1874 as Managing Clerk to a solicitor called Lind (Ref: t18740817-516)

Charged with fraud in 1879. Age about 53. "He is again indicted" refers to an earlier event.
Another mention of Paris, with several witnesses coming to England to testify. Reference to a son, Daniel Levy who is a clerk with Messrs Fisher. Guilty - 18 months imprisonment.

Owing to her very long life, many of her great-grandchildren have vivid recollections of this great-grandmother. One story has it that whenever she saw a great-grandchild she would give him/her a nickel. Another was that she was a very tiny woman, possibly due to shrinkage associated with old age Lived to be nearly 95.

She and husband settled in Chicago from London in 1869-70, opening a furniture store on Blue Island Avenue which was later taken over by their oldest daughter and son-in-law. Later they operated a shoe store on Jackson Boulevard. At the time of her death she was living in the home of her youngest son, Joseph Simons.
