Frederick George Greenland aka Harry George Frederick Bryde

Last modified date

Frederick George Greenland was born to William Greenland and Emily nee Jacobs in 1884.

We had him documented only as far as the 1901 census but not beyond that (basically no work had been done on finding him.

However, in July 2024 I was contacted by John Dwyer who had chapter and verse on what happened to Frederick after 1901.

The mystery starts in 1907 when his mother, Emily and brother George, post a ‘Missing’ notice in the newspaper.

Research led to discovering that Frederick having gone to Australia – possibly working on Merchant Navy Ships.

In 1917 he marries Lucy Wood in New South Wales. Lucy divorces him in 1934 on the grounds of desertion.

Now the interesting bit starts.

In 1919 there is a Harry George Frederick Bryde marrying a Dora Fielding.

The belief is that Frederick has changed his name (note that Frederick and George are his original forenames).

What can be found to substantiate this?

John’s cousin, Katherine Pritchard, had the handwriting of Frederick Greenland and Harry Bryde analysed.

The source for Frederick was his signature on his marriage certificate to Lucy.

For Harry Bryde they had a recipe book written by him plus his marriage certificate and declaration to his marriage to Dora.

The conclusion was that they were the same person.

John has kindly sent me some photographs which can be seen in  the Photo Gallery. Photo Gallery

John has also compiled a document explaining all the work done on this part of the tree.
