Abraham Jacobs & Family – Update
This is an update on the original 2008 post Abraham Jacobs & Family
Phil Kirby contacted me in May 2024 and suggested having a fresh look at Abraham and his family to see if we could make any progress on the original theory.
Unfortunately the answer is still a ‘maybe’. However, the latest data and thoughts are shown below.
Questions Arising
- 1851 Anglo Jewry Database indicates possible spouse for Abraham of ‘Lizzie’ but offers no explanation as to why.
- Whilst we have a lot of Jacobs entries for properties in Crown Street (45 entries) – we only have 1 for No. 14 and that is Abraham.
- Parents for Abraham and his sister Alice indicate they would have to be married before 1780 (Alice’s birth)
- This would make their parents born before 1760 (1780-20)
- The 3 known sons of David Jacobs (1727) are:
- Henry c1767; Jacob (John) c 1869 BD PHILIP C 1771
-
- I would argue that this rules out these 3 sons as father of Abraham and Alice
- What it doesn’t do is rule out Dave as their father
I’ve come up with a tree based on that information:
Observations
- He appears to be consistent with his age, therefore also DOB
- Earliest census is 1841 – no wife with him so can we assume that she has already died?
- Am assuming that the Alice in 1841 is his sister pre-marrying
- Can’t find Abraham in 1861
- Youngest child, Henry, born 1828 so no GRO entry
- 1856 Dissolves partnership with Solomon Solomons https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/4838815?searchTerm=%27solomon%20solomon%27
- 1857 Bankruptcy notice in London Gazette appears to show that Abraham and sons are now in Melbourne (would explain why not in 1861 census)
- In partnership with Solomon Solomon
- Australian newspaper suggests that only Abraham & Henry are in Australia https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/7140043?searchTerm=%22abraham%20jacobs%22
- Newspaper identifies Solomon Solomon as son-in-law of Abraham
- https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/5679367?searchTerm=%22abraham%20jacobs%22
- When did they go to and come back from Australia – can’t find on passenger lists
- 1872 Deaths – Australian Newpapers – lists Abraham Jacobs as father of Mrs Solomon Solomon of 100 Collies(?) Street, Melbourne
- 1872 – JC only mentions the two sons
- No entry for a will
- We should also consider the 2008 posting from Debbie Bozkurt https://jacobstree.co.uk/2008/03/09/abraham-jacobs/
